Home Articles Sanskrit And The Stone Tablets Of Amarna

Some 3400 years ago there lived 'Amenhotep lll' ruler of Egypt and grandfather of Tutunkhamun, and within his heart he desired the hand of the daughter of 'Tushratta' the King of Mittani.

Six times he requested the hand of the daughter of Tushratta and due to advanced age he was refused and so he wrote to the father of Tushratta saying "the father is more merciful than son, please fulfil my desire".

Although his desire was granted and princess Tadukhipa was duly despatched, by the time she arrived Amenhotep had left this world and instead she married his son Akhetanen and became the famous Queen Kiya.

These conversations of Amenhotep and Tushratta were discovered in Hattusa, capital of the Hittite Kingdom, where hundreds of stone tablets give a glimpse of life in Western Asia 3400 years ago.

These stones show the presence of the Vedic culture of India within Western Asia some 3400 years ago as in the names mentioned and the language written and the gods which are evoked.

'Tushratta' a 'King of Mittani' is accepted as the 'Ratha' of Sanskrit meaning 'chariot' and 'Tusha' is 'Dasha' hence 'Dasaratha' one whose chariot ( ratha ) travels in ten ( dasa ) directions.

Mittani kings bear names composed of Sanskrit as in 'Rtadharma' the law ( rta ) of dharma and other names such as 'Artashumara' 'Suttarna' 'Baratarna' 'Parsatatar' 'Mativasa' 'Kirta' 'Vashasatta'.

Mittani capital was 'Washukhani' which is 'Vasukhani' a name of Sanskrit meaning mine ( khani ) of wealth ( vasu ) and in 'Kissuwatna' a Kingdom of Mittani, we see Kings whose names are Sanskrit.

'Sunasura' means the son ( suna ) of the sun ( sura ) and we have 'Pariyavatri' meaning one who travels ( pariya ) like the wind ( vatri ) and 'Padati' meaning 'foot soldier' all Sanskrit names and Kings of Mittani.

These stone tablets found within the Hittite Kingdom of Hattusa contain a horse manual by a trainer known as Kikuli and many instructions are written in the language of Sanskrit.

Their word for horse trainer is 'Assussani' which is 'Asvasani' as in one who procures ( sani ) horses ( asva ) and in one instruction he writes 'Aika Wartana' indicating 'one turn' as in one ( eka ) turn ( vartana ) all words from Sanskrit.

'Tera Wartana' is three ( tri ) turns ( vartana ) and 'Panza Wartana' five ( panca ) turns ( vartana ) and 'Satta Wartana' seven ( sapta ) turns ( vartana ) and 'Navartanaa' nine ( nava ) turns ( vartana ) all words from Sanskrit.

A fascinating discovery is the Shattivasa treaty in which the King of the Hittites agrees to invade Mittani to install the son of Tushratta as the rightful heir and at the end of the tablet the King calls as his witness the following.

"The storm god, lord of heaven and earth and the Moon god and Sun god, the storm gods, the Mitra gods, the Varuna gods, Indra, the Nasatya gods, lord of Vasukhani, the mountains and rivers, deities of heaven and deities of earth."

3400 years ago the Kings of Western Asia evoke 'Varuna' 'Indra' and the 'Twin Asvinis' indicating how Vedic India was widespread and how its traditional dates of 5000 years for Mahabharata and Vedas are supported by evidence.

When flying an airplane, one cannot take care of other planes. Everyone has to take care of his own plane, and if there is any danger, no other plane can help another in that condition. Similarly, at the end of life, when one has to go back home, back to Godhead, everyone has to take care of himself without help rendered by another. The help is, however, offered on the ground before flying in space. Similarly, the spiritual master, the father, the mother, the relatives, the husband and others can all render help during one's lifetime, but while crossing the sea one has to take care of himself and utilize the instructions formerly received.
